HELP US MEET OUR GOALS

1. Bring greater awareness that early detection saves lives

2. Help women in underserved communities access mammograms and screenings

3. Confront the reality of the 41% higher mortality rate among Black women

4. Encourage women to heal and inspire through the power of writing their story

EVENT OVERVIEW

BREAST CANCER FACTS*

For All Women

Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in women worldwide (except for skin cancers).

In the U.S., about 1 in 8 women (about 13%) will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime.

Each year, around 297,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in U.S. women.

About 43,000 women in the U.S. die from breast cancer every year — though survival rates have improved steadily with early detection and better treatments.

For Black WomenWay

Black women and White women have roughly the same overall breast cancer incidence rates — but Black women tend to be diagnosed slightly younger, and more often with more aggressive subtypes, like triple-negative breast cancer.

Black women have a 4% lower incidence than White women overall — but the highest breast cancer death rate of any racial or ethnic group in the U.S.

Black women are about 40% more likely to die of breast cancer than White women.

Contributing factors include later stage at diagnosis, differences in access to care, treatment delays, and social determinants of health.

Why This Matters

Early detection matters: Black women under 50 have a higher risk than White women in the same age range.

Awareness + action saves lives: Mammograms, self-exams, speaking up for treatment options, and addressing barriers to care are critical.

Faith, family support, and community education are powerful tools: Sharing real stories — like yours — helps close this survival gap.
